Work has begun in earnest to remove the venerable Sea Dart from in front of the San Diego Air & Space Museum and replace it with the iconic F-14 Tomcat. The Museum’s Tomcat, which was recently featured in the Hollywood blockbuster TOP GUN: Maverick, will be the centerpiece of a lasting monument to the men and women who flew, designed and maintained one of the Navy's most iconic planes.
Soils testing is complete and design work on the support structure and monument, which will be placed at the site, are in the works. The difficult tasks of the removing the Sea Dart removal and moving to its new home at Gillespie, and the painting of the Tomcat and movement to its new home in front of the museum are both in the discussion and information gathering stage. The Museum is very excited about this project and anticipate a great new display when it is complete.
