Mission Control Bus

San Diego Air & Space Museum launches Mission Control a converted bus to mobile classroom. Explore engineering, design thinking, innovation and creativity on board. Scholarships available to San Diego County Title 1 schools and special education classes. ( limit 6 per school)

Max of 30 students and 2 teachers or 32 humans aboard.

Programs

Grade PK-K - Join our educators for an interactive storytime and design thinking challenge geared for little learners. Cost $185 first program $165 each additional session same day.

  • 3 Little Pigs in Space - Join our educators as we build habitats on the moon.
  • Up, Up and Away - Discover airplanes and flying things natural and invented

Grade K-2 - These hands-on sessions focus on STEM Basics. Cost $200 first program $165 each additional session same day. 

  • Rocketry- Ready to be a rocket scientist? Construct a rocket and then watch it launch using the power of bubbles

  • Robots-Coding- Explore beginning coding with an off screen intro activity and then progress to using a robot that will follow simple codes.

Grade 3-5 and 6-8 - Our Interactive sessions challenge students in Innovation and Creativity. Cost $200 first program and $165 each additional session same day. 

  • Mars Rovers: Natural Resources- Discover alternative energy sources as we build rovers to use either wind or solar power (depending on weather). Brief discussion on renewable and non-renewable sources off planet.

  • Aircraft Design: Forces and Motion- design, build, and test their own hand-launched gliders to safely carry a valuable payload. See how balanced and unbalanced forces interact in the glider.

Signature Mission Control Only Programs $200 for the first program and $165 for additional same day same programs.

  • Astrophysics - Explore the Universe outside of our solar system
    • Younger (K-3)- Create galaxy pinwheels and an alien from a far off exoplanet
    • Older (4-8)- Examine Meteorites and Geology and then try your hand at astroid mining
  • Computer Science Space Making- Circuitry, Computational Thinking and Creativity combine
    • Younger (K-3)- Combine recyclables, motors and imagination to create a device to explore other planets. (Group project)
    • Older (4-8) Make your own rover control and guide it on a mission. (Group project)

Mission Control Logisitics

This vehicle is 42 feet long, 14 feet wide and 15 feet tall and normally takes 8 to 10 parking spaces. Students enter from the passenger side of the bus and the bus does have a wheelchair lift. Pictures of the space to park the bus will be requested upon booking. We can go to blacktop playgrounds and side roads, please ensure the children can safely walk to and from the bus. Happy to discuss the spacing needed.

Locations outside of San Diego County will be charged a $.75 a mile fee both ways for the additional travel.
