When the Second World War ended, the Cold War started, and aircraft development did not skip a beat. Our models document this period, and carry over all the way into the Space Race as well.
This diorama is signed by Tony Levier the test pilot who flew the XP-80 depicted in it.
These two models were used by Convair to test proposals in their low speed wind tunnel. The Convair XP6Y-1, top was never built, which the XP-54 Swoosh Goose on the bottom had 2 prototypes built, but never say production.
Postwar Ryan projects we have models for include the VZ-3 Vertiplane, Fleep, Navion and Firebee II.
The Vertiplane was important in learning more about VSTOL flight.
The Fleep was meant to be a flying Jeep!
The Navion was a popular civil aircraft.
The 640 and 990 were used by a wide variety of airlines.
Models of Flying Wings include those of the XB-35 and the Vought V-173 Flying Flapjack.
Space related models include those of the Atlas, Atlas Centaur, Saturn V and the Mars Explorer Rover.
If you enjoyed this exhibit, you will find 100s of other models in our Curatorial Image collection on Flickr.
