Online Exhibit Spotlight: The History of Army Aviation

back to articles

Army Aviation was there at the beginning of it all...the beginning of balloon flight, the beginning of heavier-than-air flight, and the beginning of aviation as an essential combat arm of the greatest fighting force the world has ever known. As the technology of flight allowed combatants to see and take advantage of this new form of “high ground,” this force multiplier quickly added the third dimension to land combat. Thus began the marriage of developing flight technology and a few key Army leaders who saw a potential to change warfare forever by adding this new dimension, alongside, and equal to, land and sea; and who fought vigorously to demonstrate its potential. The San Diego Air & Space Museum’s new online exhibit looks at the history of Army Aviation for its beginnings to the present day.
