The Museum's Education department is hard at work developing new virtual enrichment for students and families. While the majority of participants continue to join us from local San Diego neighborhoods, the remote nature of the programming allows for children all across the country to join in the fun, with three different time zones and at least four different states represented on some Zoom sessions.
The holidays were a time of reflection and gratitude, and the Museum shifted gears to look internally for direction on how best to show our appreciation for our community with the From Our Space to Yours: SDASM Community Scholarship Program. Each Museum staff member was invited to nominate a classroom or community organization to receive a free one-hour virtual workshop. The pool of nominees was narrowed to three recipients by random lottery, and each organization was contacted to schedule one of the Museum’s numerous virtual workshop offerings.
Looking ahead, the perennial favorite Little Engineers preschool program will continue to meet on Zoom through May, with class themes including Our Favorite Planet, Architects & Artists, Storybook Science: Chapter 2, and What Goes Up. For older children grades 2-5, Air and Space at Your Place is our remote afterschool program at 3 PM PST on Wednesday afternoons. Upcoming themes include Radical Rocketry, Artists & Astronomers, and Time Machines.
In recognition of the difficult times facing our community, our education programs will continue to operate on a “Pay What You Can” sliding scale to support families experiencing financial hardship.
