Full-Time Museum Registrar

The San Diego Air & Space Museum (SDASM) in Balboa Park seeks a dynamic, energetic, and dedicated Registrar of Collections to help fulfill our mission to preserve, inspire, educate and celebrate a new generation of aviation and space exploration enthusiasts. The desired candidate will have a history of collections management and recordkeeping. SDASM is the fifth largest aviation museum in the nation, hosting a collection of aircraft, aviation related objects, and a comprehensive library and archives.

Receive, register, and catalog SDASM collections, which includes aircraft, engines, artifacts, books and archival materials. Work collaboratively with collection staff in curatorial and the Library & Archives. Prepare and provide donation, loan records, and various contracts in accordance with approved AAM standards and California nonprofit law.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage, compile, and verify collection documents, to include both manual and computerized records and forms (Donation, Deed of Gift, Loans)
  • Coordinate with potential donors and appropriate staff on acquiring new materials
  • Assist in developing and maintaining databases of collection items
  • Assist in tracking and documenting movement of all collection items
  • Coordinate proper storage and care of incoming artifacts 
  • Photograph objects and complete condition reports
  • Research collection materials for inclusion in records and databases
  • Answer inquiries from donors, researchers, and the public
  • Assist in shipping and receiving artifacts
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in History, Museum Studies (Museology), or other field related to the collection of SDASM
  • Competency in PastPerfect software
  • Understanding of accepted collections procedure for preservation of museum artifacts
  • Demonstrated experience in records management; knowledge of records management principles and procedures
  • Knowledge and understanding of curatorial principles, methods, procedures and techniques
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively in a team environment
  • Strong ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Strong computer skills and knowledge, including database management
  • Thorough knowledge of professional museum standards and ethics
  • Demonstrate the highest degree of integrity and honesty
  • Maintain a current knowledge of issues and best practices within the Museum field
  • Knowledge of aerospace history and technology and appreciation of relevance represented by SDASM’s collection is a plus

Working Conditions

Work may be performed in an office, museum, or field environment. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to sit at a desk, use hands, communicate via telephone and computer, reach with hands and arms, and lift up to 30 pounds. A criminal background clearance is required prior to a final offer of employment.


Starting at $18-21 per hour depending on experience.
