Now on display in SPEED: Science in Motion at the San Diego Air & Space Museum; a rare 1961 Lotus Monte Carlo.
This Lotus model 19, built in 1963, was sold as a roller (complete car less engine and transmission) in blue gel-coat to Henry Olds in 1962.It is one of only 17 built, and only one of six fitted with a V8.Its unique features include an all-aluminum alloy Olds V8 engine, which is very small and powerful, though only 3.8 liters (228 cubic inches) of displacement. Olds’ partner, Bob Colombosian, drove the car in some USRC events and the car was then sold to Norm Namerow, later to Peter Learch, and finally to McKee Cars.
The car was raced primarily in Canada and the northeastern United States in the USRRC events of the day. Number 963 had some good USRRC results, doing well several times at Mosport, the best being a 3rd in the Canadian Grand Prix USRRC event. The car also ran at St. Jovite, Harewood, and notably, the Nassau Tourist Trophy race in 1963. The car was restored to the original configuration and colors in 2005-2006.
