Library & Archives Mission

The Library & Archives of the San Diego Air & Space Museum actively encourages the use of the Museum’s research materials to further the public’s education of aviation and space history and technology. The mission statement of the Library & Archives reflects this goal:

The mission of the Library & Archives at the San Diego Air & Space Museum is to collect, preserve, and make available for research published, documentary, and visual materials that chronicle the development of Air & Space technology and experience.

About the Library & Archives

The Library & Archives serves as repository for several types of historical and contemporary publications and records related to aviation and space history, including technical specifications of aircraft. The main focus of this world-class collection is aviation-related materials with an emphasis on aerospace vehicles, events, and individuals associated with the geographical area of San Diego, California.

The San Diego Air & Space Museum Library & Archives houses one of the largest collections of Air & Space-related books and archival materials in the country. This extensive collection, which includes many unique and rare items, consists of books, periodicals, films and video tapes, audio tapes (including oral histories), manuals, plus a very large number of photos, personal and organizational papers, clippings, articles, and other archival materials. Online Catalog

The San Diego Air & Space Museum’s extensive Library & Archives collections may be searched using AeroCat, the Museum’s online catalog. Books, journal titles, oral histories, films and videos, albums and scrapbooks, and other materials are now accessible. Several films and significant portions of some of the albums have been digitized and are available through links in AeroCat. Additional archival materials are being processed and are periodically added to the catalog

  • ONLINE ARCHIVE OF CALIFORNIA: Metadata and finding guides of our archival collections, personal papers, and special collections are searchable through the Online Archive of California
  • INTERNET ARCHIVE: Some of our digitized material is also available through Internet Archive, a free online digital library. https://archive.org/

Who Can Use the Library & Archives?

The Library & Archives is open to Museum staff, volunteers and docents, Museum members, academic researchers, students, and aviation enthusiasts. Cost of using the Library & Archives is reflected in Museum admission and is free for Museum members, although fees will be charged for photocopies and image reproductions.

Library & Archives Hours

Tuesday to Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Closed on Mondays, weekends, federal holidays, and for some Museum functions. Prior appointments are required: 619.234.8291 ext. 126, or contact us
