Guests from around the world are assembling for a spectacular evening of fun and extraordinary recognition for the annual star-studded International Air & Space Hall of Fame gala on Saturday Nov. 21, the San Diego Air & Space Museum announced today.
Get ready for a day of engineering, coding, creativity, and flying pumpkins! Pumpkin Chunkin’ is returning to the San Diego Air & Space Museum on October 10, from 10 am to 1 pm bringing hands-on STEM challenges and plenty of Halloween fun for kids and families.
The always-enjoyable Open Hangar Day opportunities include activities for kids of all ages, Docent-led tours, and up-close and personal looks at the Museum’s fascinating world class restoration projects.
Discover the remarkable story of “the most famous pilot you’ve never heard of”—a woman who shattered aviation records, broke the sound barrier and helped change the course of history, only to be largely forgotten by it.
This summer, the Museum’s Gillespie Field Annex welcomed a unique volunteer team: grandfather and grandson Norman and Gage Yancovich. Each contributed about 160 volunteer hours, working primarily on two World War II-era Willys Jeeps and assisting with other projects as needed. Their time at the Museum combined restoration work, family history, and the opportunity to learn more about one another.
The R44 is a single-engine helicopter equipped with a semi-rigid two-bladed main rotor, a two-bladed tail rotor, and a skid landing gear. It was designed by the Robinson Helicopter Company as a replacement for the lightweight R22 Series helicopters in the late 1980s. It has an enclosed cabin with two rows of side-by-side seating a pilot and three passengers.
The aircraft visitors see in the Museum’s galleries are the visible result of thousands of decisions made far from the finished display. Before a damaged wing can be rebuilt, a missing component fabricated, or historic markings reapplied, staff and volunteers must determine what survives, what has changed, which evidence can be trusted, and which chapter of an aircraft’s history the finished object should represent.
