Work Continues on the Boeing FB-5 and Hughes Racer

back to articles

Gillespie Field volunteers have finished stitching the fabric to the upper wing of the Boeing FB-5. We are about to start applying finish coatings. The Museum's aircraft will be depicted in the markings of VF-1 on the USS Langley -- the US Navy's first aircraft carrier -- in the late 1920’s.

The Aeronca L-3B, also at the Museum’s Gillespie Field Annex, has been finished in U.S. Army WW2 colors and the national insignia has been applied. Work is progressing on the cockpit interior and the horizontal tail installation.

Work on the Hughes H-1 racer continues in the basement on the Museum’s location in Balboa Park. Our dedicated volunteers are building a mock-up of the cockpit – no easy task, considering they are literally designing and building the cockpit from scratch – and assembling the wooden ailerons.

Visitors may view our restoration projects at the Gillespie Field facility or in our Restoration Shop at the Museum in Balboa Park. Additional images can be found on our website.
