Spring is a great time to get your aviation fix in San Diego.

The fun kicks off on April 6-9 when the historic “Big Twins” aircraft arrive at to El Cajon’s Gillespie Field.

The “Big Twins” are a North American B-25 WII Medium Bomber and a Douglas DC-3 World War II Troop Transport and Early Airliner.

Their visit will begin with two days of living heritage flight experiences and static tours on Friday and Saturday. Daily tours begin at 9 a.m. On Sunday, the activities will be supplemented by ground schools for pilots and non-pilots.

Each Monday will feature pilot training leading to a second-in-command type rating.

That same weekend, make sure to attend the Concours d'Elegance of America at La Jolla Shores for the 5:30 to 6 pm flyover (April 7) and the MAIN event flyover of 30 aircraft on Sunday (April 8) from 10:30 a.m. to 12 pm. The flyover features some new additions this year, including jets and warbirds, which will augment the annual classic Stearman flyover. Terry Brennan, Curator and Director of Restoration at the San Diego Air & Space Museum, is scheduled to fly in this year’s event.

The following weekend on Saturday, April 14, make it out to Gillespie Field again for the Air Group One Wing Warbird Expo. The Museum is going have its Douglas A2D “Skyshark” on display at the Expo. Gates are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The entrance is at the West Ramp off N. Marshall Avenue.
