NASA Names Artemis II Crew

Scheduled for a 2024 launch, Artemis II will be NASA’s first mission with crew aboard the agency’s foundational deep space rocket, the Space Launch System, and Orion spacecraft. The Mission will confirm all the spacecraft’s systems operate as designed with crew aboard in the actual environment of deep space. The mission will pave the way for lunar surface missions, including by the first woman and first person of color, establishing long-term lunar science and exploration capabilities, and inspire the next generation of explorers - The Artemis Generation.

On April 3, 2023, NASA introduced the four crew members of the Artemis II mission; Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, and Mission Specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen.

Artemis II will be Wiseman’s second trip to space. He previously served as Flight Engineer aboard the International Space Station for Expedition 41. During the 165-day mission, Wiseman and his crewmates spent hundreds of hours conducting valuable scientific research in areas such as human physiology, medicine, physical science, Earth science and astrophysics. They completed a record 82 hours of research in a single week. Wiseman also fostered a strong social media presence throughout his mission by sharing photos, personal tweets and short videos about life aboard the station. It was Wiseman’s first spaceflight, which also included almost 13 hours of spacewalking. He also has recently served as the Chief of the Astronaut Office. Like Glover, Wiseman is a former Naval Aviator.

Glover was selected as an astronaut in 2013 while serving as a Legislative Fellow in the United States Senate. He most recently served as pilot and second-in-command on the SpaceX Crew-1 Dragon, named Resilience, which splashed down on May 2, 2021. It is the first post-certification mission of SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft – the second crewed flight for that vehicle – and a long duration mission aboard the International Space Station. He served as Flight Engineer on the International Space Station for Expedition 64. Glover is a Naval Aviator and was a test pilot in the F/A‐18 Hornet, Super Hornet and EA‐18G Growler.

Koch was selected as a NASA astronaut in 2013. She served as flight engineer on the International Space Station (ISS) for Expedition 59, 60 and 61. Koch set a record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman with a total of 328 days in space and participated in the first all-female spacewalks. Koch attended North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering and Physics and a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering.

Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut Jeremy Hansen will become the first Canadian to ever venture to the Moon during the Artemis II mission. From 2004 to 2009, Hansen served as a CF-18 fighter pilot with 441 Tactical Fighter Squadron and 409 Tactical Fighter Squadron as well as the Combat Operations Officer at 4 Wing Operations where his responsibilities include effectiveness of NORAD Operations, Deployed Exercises and Arctic Flying Operations. In 2017, he became the first Canadian to be entrusted with leading a NASA astronaut class, which meant he was in charge of the training astronaut candidates from the United States and Canada. Artemis II will be his first time in space.
