The San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park seeks an Education Assistant/Bus Driver to join our team. The STEM Education Assistant/Bus Driver drives the Museum’s mobile classroom to various locations in San Diego County and assists the Museum instructor at each site. This position is part-time but may lead to a full-time position as grant funding allows. The Museum will pay for required commercial driver training for the right candidate without bus driver certifications but willing to drive.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Drive Museum instructor (no students) in 36-foot bus to/from various locations in San Diego County
  • Safely operate the bus in accordance with all state laws and regulations
  • Perform bus inspections before and after each route
  • Maintain a clean and mechanically sound bus at all times
  • Attend safety trainings as required and maintain required licenses
• Assist with mobile classroom instruction at each site
  • Promote a safe, engaging learning environment for all audiences
  • Maintain creativity, high energy and flexibility under pressure
• Support other Museum programs including birthday parties, educational workshops, outreach programs and evening/weekend events at the direction of the Education Director

Required Qualifications

• California Class B license with air brakes endorsement
• First aid and BLS certification
• Clean driving record with no at-fault accidents or traffic citations within the last five years
• At least three years of experience driving a vehicle
• Teaching experience desired, preferably in STEM information education
• Basic knowledge of, and enthusiasm for, STEM fields, including interest in, or willingness to learn, the field represented by the Museum collection
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

Employment Requirements

• Pre-employment drug screening and background check
• Proof of COVID-19 full vaccination status unless there is a valid medical or religious exemption
• TB certificate stating free from active TB
• California Department of Justice fingerprinting clearance

Working Conditions
Work may be performed in an office, museum, or field environment. Moderate physical activity is required, including the handling of objects up to 25 pounds. Some evenings and weekends are required. Compensation
$18-20 for Education Assistance hours, $20-24 for Bus Driving hours
