Engineer, innovator, and space entrepreneur Stephen Altemus is the co-founder, president, and CEO of Intuitive Machines, a private space company dedicated to advancing robotic and human exploration of the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
Before entering the private sector, Altemus spent nearly three decades at NASA, where he served in the Human Spaceflight Division. He played a pivotal role in the forensic investigation of the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster and later helped ensure the safety and success of subsequent shuttle missions until the fleet’s retirement in 2011.
In 2013, Altemus co-founded Intuitive Machines to bridge government and private-sector innovation. In February 2024, the company achieved a landmark milestone by becoming the first private company to land a spacecraft on the Moon. Through his leadership, Altemus continues to expand access to space exploration, demonstrating that ingenuity, efficiency, and determination can redefine what’s possible beyond Earth.
