Si Robin

back to honorees

Engineer, inventor and industrialist, Si Robin has for many years been a major influence in advancing aerospace technology, most particularly through his development of modern aircraft antennas. Robin holds over 80 patents for antenna-related products he has developed. His company offers over 250 antenna products, and produces over 11,000 antennas a day, supplying virtually all aircraft manufacturers around the world. Born in 1928, Robin attended college in Montreal, Quebec, where he was first introduced to electronics. In 1948, he relocated to California, first joining Douglas Aircraft Company, working on antennas. He left Douglas, joining Bendix, also in the Los Angeles area, and then left Bendix to join Sensor Systems, a much smaller California company, located in Chatsworth. He took over Sensor Systems in 1970. Robin led Sensor Systems to several large military contracts, providing antennas for AWACS and KC-135 aircraft, and then expanded into a number of commercial antenna contracts. Today, Sensor Systems, under Robin's continuing leadership, has become an international provider. Major aviation clients include Airbus, Cessna, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, General Atomics, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon and Honeywell. His company is still located in Chatsworth, and many of Robin's extended family serve in key Sensor System roles. Robin is an avid pilot, owns many vintage aircraft, and still flies his J-3 Cub and a Beechcraft Staggerwing. He donated his 1930 Stinson SM-8A Junior to the San Diego Air & Space Museum. Besides flying, he also competes in vintage automobile races, winning championships in 2002 and 2004. In 2009, Robin received the Living Legends of Aviation Inventor Award for his lifelong accomplishments in aircraft antennae design and development.
