Roger Schaufele

As an Aerodynamicist, Roger D. Schaufele was once responsible for the design, development and production of all Douglas aircraft. Born in Woodbridge, New Jersey on March 30, 1928, he graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1952 and joined Douglas Aircraft Company, later receiving an advanced degree in Aeronautics from the California Institute of Technology. Schaufele served in the Navy, involved with the F-9F Panther and F-11F Tiger, A-4 Skyhawk, Convair Sea Dart and Tradewind, P6M SeaMaster, F-8U Crusader, Sidewinder and Sparrow systems, as well as the Regulus II cruise missile. After his Navy service, he returned to Douglas as an aerodynamic stability and control engineer, and in the early 1960s, was appointed Assistant Chief of Aerodynamics, and later project aerodynamicist for the DC-9 and DC-10 programs. Schaufele was then appointed Director of Technologies, responsible for all engineering work performed on Douglas aircraft. He was later appointed Director of Advanced Engineering, in charge of development of all new commercial and military aircraft. When named Director of Aircraft Design, he oversaw all design engineering efforts for Douglas production programs. After advancement to Vice President, Engineering Division, then Vice President and General Manager for Commercial Advanced Products, he oversaw the business planning for commercial aircraft programs. Retiring in 1989, he joined California State University, Long Beach as a lecturer, and taught aircraft preliminary design and performance for 20 years. He is the author of "The Elements of Aircraft Preliminary Design," used at several colleges and universities.
