back to honorees

Actor, pilot, humanitarian and aviation advocate, Harrison Ford is best known for his legendary film and television roles, but, the aviation community has been the beneficiary of his role as a mentor, teacher, humanitarian, and as an inspiration for others. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Ford attended Ripon College in Wisconsin, where he first tried his hand at acting. After a few minor roles, Ford soon solidified a place in motion picture history as one of its finest action heroes, starring in both the Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark film series. And, often, flying played a major role in his films, from roles in the Indiana Jones series, to Star Wars, to Air Force One, from early aviation to space travel, and to protecting the President. In his personal life, Harrison Ford's love for flying and his belief in its utilitarian benefits prompted a natural willingness to promote aviation to others. Ford joined the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) in 2009 to promote and advance the role of general aviation within the transportation industry. He is national spokesman of the General Aviation Serves America campaign, which strives to improve the perception of general aviation. He also served from 2004-2009 as Honorary Chairman of the Experimental Aircraft Association Young Eagles program, motivating tens of thousands of volunteers to mentor, fly and introduce 500,000 young people to aviation. Ford personally took over 300 Young Eagles on their first flights. He has been specifically recognized for "engaging our nation's youth in aviation and inspiring tomorrow's leaders, innovators and enthusiasts to secure a strong future for all of aviation." Ford, a part time resident of Jackson, Wyoming volunteers his helicopter and participates in search and rescue efforts. His helicopter piloting skills were put to the test in 2010 when he flew his Bell 407 to rescue a stranded hiker near his Wyoming ranch. Ford also used his Cessna Caravan to transport doctors and medical supplies to Haiti after the earthquake, and has also transported athletes to the Special Olympics. Ford served as Honorary Chairman of the 2010 Special Olympics Airlift. Ford has also been honored with the Living Legends of Aviation Legacy Award, Freedom of Flight Award, and the Lindbergh Foundation Award, in addition to countless awards for his distinguished acting career.
