The San Diego Department of Education produced these space-age educational teacher kits in the late 1960s for in-classroom use in educating elementary students about space science. The boxes are stamped from Castle Park High School in Sweetwater Union High School District. The material was produced in cooperation with the San Diego County Department of Education’s Community Educational Resources, The San Diego Unified School District, and the National Defense Education Act Administration of the California State Department of Education.
In addition to educators and city and school representatives, the Community Educational Resources Advisory Committee in San Diego included representatives from local science institutions such as General Dynamics/Convair, Ryan Aeronautical Company, The U.S. Naval Training Center, the U.S. Naval Hospital, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoological Society, the U.S. Navy Electronics Laboratory, Teletek, Inc., and the Pacific Telephone Company.
Themes include space exploration, human spaceflight, and lunar exploration. Each kit includes a teacher’s guide with suggested classroom activities, student handouts, sound recordings, filmstrips, posters, and photos for engaging and interactive lessons.
