The Dennis R. Jenkins Digital Only Space Collection contains space related images collected by Mr. Jenkins and covers all major American space programs, with a focus on the Space Shuttle. This collection contains approximately 167,000 images.
This is a collection of images concerning the United States (mainly) space program, with a concentration on the Space Shuttle Program that ran between 1969 and 2011. The majority of documents and images contained within it are in the public domain (most are government-generated); those that are not are marked appropriately.
Space Shuttle Mission Photos Folder
This is a collection of some 170,000 images covering all Space Shuttle flights. Almost all are from official NASA sources, although some private photos exist within the collection. Flights after the Columbia accident (STS-107) contribute a significant number of these images due to two factors: an official desire to better document the flights for engineering purposes, and the advent of digital photography that greatly reduced the cost and complexity of taking and archiving large numbers of images. Many on-orbit images, taken by either the Orbiter crew or the crew of the International Space Station, exist for the later flights, again due mostly to the advent of digital photography. The images are organized with each flight having an individual folder named after the mission designation. Within each folder, particularly for the later flights, there are subfolders that attempt to subdivide the images into more workable segments.
Space History Photos Folder
This is a rather strange collection of 18,000 images maintained by the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston. It is arranged by year, although the user is cautioned that the events depicted in a given year did not necessarily occur in that year. These images have no pattern, and do not seem to represent anything other than random items or events, ranging from personnel portraits to mission execution. Nevertheless, many of the images are unusual or rare, and many have never been see before.
This images will be on Flickr shortly. Please contact the Museum for details.
