Fly Your Ride 2022 - Blue Prints

BUILD A FLYING CAR! Sound complicated? It’s not.

You can read the full rules online, but the idea is simple: build a vehicle, release it down a ramp, and see if it can land safely on the other side of the gap. It can’t be too big, it can’t be too expensive, and it can’t be too dangerous, but the rest is up to you and your imagination! We’ll give you feedback, create opportunities to talk to experts, and give away great prizes.

Ages:

Fly Your Ride is open to 5th-8th grade.

Due dates:

Blueprints are due on Feb 1, 2022 and competition finals will be held at The San Diego Air & Space Museum on May 7, 2022.

Teacher Student help:

Teachers can request a mentorship to help establish a new program. A staff member will be assigned to help answer questions, get material grants for students, and host a student or student/parent launch meeting to explain the concept. Students, we are offering a limited amount of $30 grants to buy/obtain materials to build their vehicles. Grant applications will be available once the student has an approved blueprint.

Checklist:

  • Submit your initial Blueprint design to us by Feb 1, 2022.
  • Our judging team will evaluate your entry and will let you know if you’re going on to the final round by February 20, 2022.
  • We’ll give you opportunities to talk to our experts at the San Diego Air & Space Technology Low Speed Wind Tunnel, which is owned by the Museum.
  • The Big Day! We’ll hold the competition finals at the Museum, and see how your car does on the ramp. We’ll then pick the winners and award the prizes!

Prizes:

Cash prizes from $200 to $700 will be awarded to the most creative, sustainable, as well as the top three furthest distances flown in each age category.
