With much thanks to our generous supporters, renovation has begun. Located in the historic Ford Building in Balboa Park, the San Diego Air & Space Museum Library & Archives houses one of the most significant collections of aviation related research material in the world. This collection is recognized as the third largest collection of its kind in the United States. Improved storage and preservation of these valuable resources has been a priority for the past few years, and significant improvements are now being realized, guaranteeing the preservation of our unique research collection for future generations.
The San Diego Air & Space Museum is pleased to announce it has been awarded subsequent accredita- tion by the American Association of Museums. Accreditation is a widely recognized seal of approval that brings national recognition to museums for their commitment to excellence, accountability, high professional standards, and continued institutional improvement. Of the nation’s estimated 17,500 museums, only 775 are currently accredited.
The historic San Diego Ford Building, home to the San Diego Air and Space Museum, was originally built to house the Ford Industrial exhibition for the California Pacific International Exhibition of 1935-36, turned 75 on May 29, 2010.
Environment is the most persistent force influencing the longevity of various collections, affecting them every minute of every day. The ideal collection environment includes controlled temperature and relative humidity, clean air with good circulation, controlled light sources, and freedom from biological infestation.
The Library & Archives (L&A) has received a $6,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to purchase shelving and preservation supplies, including special archival boxes. Head Archivist, Katrina Pescador, says the one-year project will address the Museum’s serious lack of space by replacing existing inadequate storage fixtures with more space efficient equipment.
