Position Summary
As part of the Exhibits department, the Fabrication team provides a key service in the overall look, function, and experience of the Museum galleries. The Fabrication team works closely with the Exhibits Curator to design, develop, and maintain permanent and temporary exhibits at the Balboa Park location according to the professional standards outlined in the Museum’s policies and procedures. They assist with the installation and de-installation of exhibits which often involve the handling and movement of collections items, ensuring that proper preservation and conservation requirements are maintained. The Fabrication team is also expected to perform these duties at the Gillespie Field location as needed. 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Receive project assignments for the creation, construction, and upkeep of Museum exhibits from the Fabrication Manager and Exhibits Curator
  • Perform machining of wood, metals, and plastics
  • Exercise professional skill with rigging, cabling, carpentry, low voltage electrical, interactive displays and equipment, adhesives and caulking, surface preparation, painting, etc. 
  • Assist with transportation of collections items and exhibit pieces on and off site, including aircraft, automobiles, paintings, display cases, interactive monitors, etc. 
  • Perform general maintenance, including troubleshooting, repairing, dusting, etc.
  • Safely and appropriately operate all tools and machines in the Fabrication workshop 
  • Adhere to proper preservation and conservation of collections items when handling and moving artifacts 
  • Adhere to safety guidelines and professional standards outlined in the Museum’s policies and procedures 
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned 

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Required

  • At least five years’ experience in fabrication or machining of wood, metals, and plastics
  • Certified or able to certify in lift operation 
  • Possess and maintain a current California driver’s license, a clean driving record, and auto insurance
  • Able to perform duties and responsibilities in a multitude of environments, including noisy, confined, and elevated spaces
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with an understanding of commonly accepted shop practices
  • Able to work with limited direction
  • Able to collaborate on projects with staff and volunteers in other departments 
  • Able to understand and execute verbal and written instructions

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Desired

  • Familiar with industry standard safety practices including Cal OSHA /Fed OSHA training and certification
  • Familiar with aviation and space history, technology, or related disciplines 
  • Familiar with current museum ethics, standards, and professional practices  

Working Conditions
Work is performed in a multitude of environments including hot, cold, underground, noisy, dusty, confined spaces, heights, and freeway driving. Heavy physical activity is required, including the handling of objects and standing/walking for more than four hours per day. The Museum is a non-smoking, drug-free workplace. Successful results from a drug screening test and criminal background check are required prior to a final offer of employment.
