A 1943 University of Washington aeronautical engineering graduate, Dale Myers joined North American Aviation, ultimately rising to Vice-President and Program Manager for the Apollo Command and Service module. After North American’s acquisition by Rockwell, Myers was named Vice President and Program Manager for Apollo Command and Service Modules at Rockwell, playing a major role in putting the first astronauts on the Moon. From Rockwell, Myers joined NASA in 1970, in charge of Apollo missions 13 through 17, the Skylab Program, the Apollo-Soyuz project, and initiation of the Space Shuttle program. During this time, he received three NASA Distinguished Service Medals for his work on Apollo, Skylab and the Shuttle, and for his contributions to manned spaceflight. Myers returned to Rockwell in 1974 as President of North American Aircraft Operations, responsible for development and production of commercial and military aircraft, also supervising the energy systems division. In 1977, President Carter appointed Myers Undersecretary of the Department of Energy, responsible for all basic and applied research, as well as technology development. In 1979, Myers was named President and Chief Operating Officer of Jacobs Engineering Group, a diversified engineering and construction company. In 1984, he formed his own consulting firm. In 1986, eleven months after the Challenger disaster, Myers was named NASA Deputy Administrator, tasked with getting the agency back on track and reviving the Space Shuttle program. He left NASA in 1989, after also serving as acting Administrator. During his career, Dale Myers received numerous awards and honors, including election to the National Academy of Engineering, elected Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics, and the Department of Energy Distinguished Service Medal. He is also a Distinguished Alumnus of the Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics at the University of Washington. Myers passed away on May 19, 2015 in Carlsbad, California at the age of 93.
