Summary
The Project Archivist is responsible for indexing and digitizing the Rohr Goodrich still image collection. They reports directly to the Archivist and aids in the organization, maintenance, preservation and inventory of the collection.  The project will include indexing and digitization of 80,000 of the negatives upon completion. The Project Archivist will work under limited supervision with considerable latitude in the use of initiative and independent judgment. Expected to uphold the highest ethical standards of a professional archivist in maintaining and protecting the Museum's archival collection.

Duties & Responsibilities 

  • Responsible for the Museum’s Rohr Goodrich collection, including organization, cataloging, storage, preservation, digitization, reproductions, and dissemination. 
  • Develops and implements best practice standards and methods to preserve and maintain the Archives collection, and works in coordination with outside organizations when desirable.
  • Assists Museum staff and volunteers, researchers, students, and members of the general public in accessing and interpreting contents of the collection.
  • Provides an efficient, courteous public image and presents a positive image of SDASM
  • Participates in some Museum special functions and may be required to travel by automobile and/or commercial aircraft to perform duties; some public speaking may be required
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree required in the humanities, history, or a field related to aerospace history and/or technology. Masters degree preferred.                                                                                    

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge and understanding of archival principles, methods, procedures, and techniques
  • Background knowledge and appreciation of aviation and aerospace history and technology
  • Knowledge of research methodology, principles, and procedures
  • Skills in the configuration, development, and use of computerized database programs
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Familiarity with scanning equipment and digital asset management software
  • Ability to interact with and serve the needs of the general public in a manner that reflects positively on the Museum
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively in a team environment
  • Intermediate computer skills and knowledge

Working Conditions
Work may be performed in an office, museum, or field environment. Moderate physical activity is periodically required, including the handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds and standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day. The Museum is a non-smoking, drug-free workplace.

Compensation
$24 per hour the first year, $26 per hour the second year.
