Collections & Assets Coordinator

The San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park seeks a full-time Collections & Assets Coordinator to join our team. Position Summary
The Collections & Assets Coordinator works closely with the Museum collection team and is responsible for the overall care of aircraft and displays and the general maintenance of equipment at the Gillespie Field location. The coordinator also works closely with the site manager on daily operational needs to ensure the safety of staff, volunteers, and visitors.

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Maintain Museum equipment, including vehicles, forklifts, trailers, and other mechanical devices.
  • Ensure aircraft are cleaned, maintained, and cared for within museum standards.
  • Solicit expertise and follow up with outside contractors for necessary repairs of equipment and aircraft.
  • Safely transport collection items between museum sites and pick up large donations.
  • Assist with third-party or museum-sponsored events held at the facility. 
  • Communicate regularly with the Collections Director and Restoration Manager regarding all operational needs, both for the physical plant and the restoration volunteers.
  • Participate in other activities in support of the Museum.

Education/Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent 
  • Minimum five years’ experience in a similar field
  • Must be able to certify as an in-house equipment operator and rigger.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Strong mechanical aptitude with an understanding of commonly accepted automotive maintenance and construction techniques.
  • Must be able to work with limited direction and be self-motivated and driven to produce the highest quality work product achievable.
  • Must be able to understand and execute detailed verbal and written instructions.
  • Positive attitude and ability to work closely with team members, vendors, donors, and other public members.
  • Familiar with using and applying personal protective equipment and a wide array of hand and power tools, emphasizing the correct and safe use of each specific tool.
  • Comfortable working from ladders of varied heights as well as elevated platforms
  • Must possess and maintain a current California driver’s license, have a clean driving record, and possess and maintain auto insurance.
  • Computer literate for communication and basic research.
  • Must be able to operate various equipment, including but not limited to Forklifts, Boom lifts, Scissor lifts, and Box trucks with up to a 26-foot box while towing a 40-foot trailer.
  • Must be able to work within established safety guidelines.

Working Conditions
Work may be performed in an office, museum, or field environment. It is performed in many environments, including hot, cold, underground, noisy, dusty, confined spaces, heights, and freeway driving. Heavy physical activity is periodically required, including handling average-weight objects up to 80 pounds or standing/walking for more than eight hours per day. There is limited exposure to physical risk. The Museum is a non-smoking, drug-free workplace.

Compenstation
$21-$25 per hour depending on skills and experience, plus benefits for full-time employment. Benefits include health, dental and vision insurance; life insurance; paid holidays; vacation and sick leave; and Balboa Park museum discounts. The Museum offers many options for health benefits and pays 90% of employee premiums for medical, dental, and vision coverage.
