This Week in SPEED: 1964 Indy 500 Race Car

This Watson-Offy Roadster raced in the 48th Indianapolis 500 on Saturday, May 30, 1964. Number 95 was driven by Chuck Stevenson and started in the 29th position. On the second lap of the race, another car (No. 83) lost control on turn four and struck the inside wall, initiating a fiery seven-car accident that claimed the lives of two drivers (Eddie Sachs and Dave MacDonald) and forced Stevenson from the race with heavy damage. A.J. Foyt would go on to win the race—the last race won by a front-engine “roadster” (all subsequent races have been won by rear-engine, formula-style cars).
