The San Diego Air & Space Museum currently has more moon rocks than any other museum on the west coast, with four on display. Moon rocks were first brought back to Earth on Apollo 11, and because no one knew what the makeup was, they were carried back in an airtight metal suitcase, which is also on display in the rotunda. Once it was realized that they were harmless, moon rocks were brought back to Earth with every mission that landed on the moon. Goodwill moon rocks brought back by Apollo 11 and 17 were given to all 50 states and 135 foreign countries by President Richard Nixon, and California’s official moon rocks can be seen in our display. Have you ever seen an actual moon rock?
