Exhibits: Telling the Story

The San Diego Air and Space Museum has several exhibit areas that celebrate women in aviation.  The main exhibit, American Women in Flight, is located by the Zable Theater.  Find out more about this exhibit here.

The Museum has several other smaller exhibits and aircraft that focus on women in aviation.

The Museum has a reproduction Lockheed Vega 5B, built for use during the making of the motion picture Amelia, starring Academy Award winning actress Hillary Swank. The Vega was the aircraft Earhart used to fly solo across the Atlantic.

The Museum has a Pitts Special painted in the color scheme of the one flown by famed pilot Betty Skelton, who flew her red and white Pitts Special, “Little Stinker,” all over the world, winning the International Aerobatic Championships for women in 1948, 1949 and 1950.

"Women in Aviation" by artist Ray Gjertson is on display in the Museum.  See below for key.

Bowlus SP-1 Albatross sailplane is on display in the Museum.  This is the type that Anne Morrow flew in to become the first licensed glider pilot in the United States.  It was also used by the "Anne Lindbergh Gliders," a group of women who learned to glide in San Diego.  Here is footage of Anne Lindbergh's first flight:
